Sonoma Vintage Motorsports Festival 2010

Posted on July 27, 2010 at 10:57am 0 Comments

Even though a good number of drivers here at the Sonoma Historic Motorsports Festival are from California, the event has a notable international contingent and a distinct worldly panache by virtue of having attracted the most extraordinary cars on the planet. The event got underway Saturday with races for seven of 13 groups entered, and by weekend’s end, 375 historic cars will have contested the demanding turns of…

Hey Buddy,
Which photo are you referring to? You coming down to Laguna for the Regional?

Hi Bill - sounds like you have been busy. I didn't run the HMSA weekend... Testing in March and first race in April at Sears Point. Will you make that race?
What about a 24 Hours De Lemons? Could be a blast!

Hey Scott -

Just back from a paying job... my racing budget is better now! I also came home to a stack of parts I bought. Huffaker is making my axles... because like everything else the Elva has those bits that are just a little different. I do have double bearing hubs for the rear and all new front end (it was a Turner now it is a GT-6 once installed). It is close... I'm sorry I couldn't make the race this weekend at LS. I literally got off the boat is Guam 2 days ago and had a stack of things to deal with. Looking forward to seeing you at the track soon. Butch is making em a new pan, he warned me about my motor needing the pan or going bang... however, I'll run it easy once if the timing is such that installation would be a problem. My headers are still back east anyway.

Best to all and see you soon.. oh, yeah! Hope you won this weekend too!!

- Bill

BTW - Did I tell you I'm running most of the SCCA season? We're talking about the run-offs now... it would be fun even to just make the field and run. Once the Elva is completed I'll step back from club racing, so I admit I have a divided loyalty at the moment.

Hi Bill, thanks for the update. Mike has kept me up to date as well. Looking forward to seeing you on the track. First race for us will be in April. Ed is on the mend, and should be ready by then. Our cars are nearly ready for the 09 season. Started working on them in October. Some changes that will make some very positive differences. After 7 years, I have finally sorted the MGAs out. Looking for a sub 2 at Sears next year and a 1:50 for Laguna. Now its up to the nut behind the wheel!

Happy Holidays!

Hey Scott -

I was just talking about you yesterday at the PBSCC Xmas luncheon. Gary Anderson was there and gave a talk. Ole had set things up. The group says hello. Also, the buzz was on about Ed breaking his foot (thought that was a while back) and the new hot rods for tearing up asphalt. I've got some Club Stories for you too but not appropriate here.

As for my Elva I'm making progress. I bought all new hubs and rear axles. I've got new long 7/16 studs pressed in today for the fronts. I need to get the bolts to hold the new brakes, but other than that the fronts are ready to be reassembled. I've got a lot of parts on back order for the rearend. Warren got me one axle but it was short by about 2 inches. So I wrote to Moss Motors (where I'm buying the nitride ones) and asked if they need any additional info from me. I haven't heard back from them yet. Mikey got me set up with MOTUL oil and brake fluid, my brand new rims are in hand. The alum floors and your Vintage 31 seats are in. I made a custom switch panel and put some nice fabric on the tunnel to clean it up.

I also wrote to Leigh (the guy I bought it from) and got what history I could for the car and him. I want to put up one of those sandwich boards one day about the car. I also joined HMSA and submitted my medical for racing. I hadn't heard from them so I wrote and asked what was happening. Cris V wrote back that new materials are coming and they'll be sending me everything once they get them. So... even with the travel, Mikey has been pushing me to get my act together. I'm hoping to get most of it completed over the holiday. Bob Walker (the yellow Elva) is going to build my rollbar once I get on the road again. He is just across the highway in PB and has everything there. The only issue at the moment is the darn back orders for parts.

So, I'll be on the track in some condition this year. Still no limited diff and Butch is supposedly getting me headers from back east ( a guy who has the patterns) but I haven't heard from him further. I did get everything else, so I'm not too worried and I'll run it either way. I need to modify the panhard bar per his instructions too, but Bob will help with that also I think.

I travel early in the year (3 trips across the Pacific and then Germany in May). I'm also running in a new car in Club, my "team mate" wants to take ITB before I step up into an ITE car. Another crazy story... a 2nd gen Rx7 with a Chevy V8 @ 650 hp without the supercharger on it yet. Believe it or not, he's checked the rules and it is legal. I'm thinking I'm stupid to get in it but I'll do the testing phase and see where we go from there.

Adios for now. I'll send you a story about my Enduro too in regular email. Sometimes you just gotta laugh. ;-) - Bill
