Mario Andretti in the never raced Ferrari 512S at Daytona 1970

In 1970 Enzo Ferrari was doing catch-up with Porsche in producing a 5-liter racer for the World Championship. Porsche already had a 6-month lead in development, testing and racing and that lead would be too much to overcome in the two years the Ferrari 512 and the Porsche 917 would compete against each other. The very first race for the Ferrari 512 was at Daytona in 1970. The factory sent over 5 cars with three being on the factory team and the other two for privateers. Only one finished and this is a picture of it. Andretti and Arturo Merzario came in third behind two Gulf Porsche 917s. One month later Andretti would win Sebring in a Ferrari 512S.
