A Deserter Dune Buggy at the 1970 Daytona 24-Hour race.

In 1970 a VW/Porsche dealer from Virginia by the name of Hugh Heishman decided, as a lark, to enter and race a VW powered Deserter Dune Buggy at the Daytona 24 Hour race. The car passed inspection and actually practiced for the event on the first day of practice. The trouble came when Jo Siffert, driving the JW Automotive Gulf Porsche 917 training (T) car had a minor fender bender with the dune buggy on the infield course. Porsche protested the dune buggy as being too slow but the stewards ruled in favor of the buggy. However, Heishman decided to withdraw the car from the event. It was a business decision according to him. He didn't want to cause his business partner (Porsche) any more grief. The photo posted on VRL is a composite of two photos since none of the dune buggy at Daytona currently exist.
