Dan Gurney is one of the few people in motorsports to have been both a successful racing driver and racecar builder. As a driver, he was the first ever to capture wins in the four major motorsports categories; Grand Prix, Indy Car, NASCAR, and Sports Car. Bringing his driving experience to bear on racecar construction, he built a series of Eagle racing cars beginning in 1964. These cars were driven to victory by racing notables such as Denny Hulme and Bobby Unser. A descendent of the earlier Eagles, this example was raced by Alex Barron in 1998. It was later passed to Robby Gordon who used it as his primary car and drove it to a high average speed of 232.357 miles per hour in Fontana on Halloween day 1999.
