Ah, the Steve McQueen - Peter Revson Porsche 908/02 on the 5.2 mile airport course at the 1970 12 Hours of Sebring (that is Steve in the driver's seat). This car has been in the news recently because it was supposed to be auctioned last August at Pebble Beach but was withdrawn prior to the auction over authenticity concerns. Some were predicting an auction price of up to $2 million. This car led the race briefly toward the end when the Mario Andretti Ferrari 512S withdrew due to mechanical problems. Andretti then jumped to the #21 team Ferrari 512S and overtook the Porsche to win by 22 seconds. Quite a remarkable performance for the eight cylinder Porsche when you compare it to the 12 cylinder Ferrari. Andretti was know to give most of the credit for the Porsche's second place finish to Peter Revson. According to Andretti, Revson drove eight of the twelve hours of the race. In fairness to Steve McQueen he was driving with a broken left foot caused by a motorcycle racing accident some days earlier in California. He was in great pain for the entire race.
