Sam Jamie Bird (born 9 January 1987 in Roehampton) is a British racing driver; he was educated at Millfield School in Somerset.
Career
Bird made his name in single seater racing in the Formula BMW category, coming fourteenth overall in his debut season and second in the rookie cup. He came runner up in 2005, which was only his second season in the category and also came fourth in the Formula BMW world final, the race itself was won by German Marco Holzer.
For 2006, Bird entered the British Formula Renault series, where he won four races and came fourth in the championship, 111 points behind series champion Sebastian Hohenthal.
In 2007, Bird raced in the British Formula Three Championship with Carlin Motorsport, racing in a Mercedes powered Dallara. In March 2007, Bird secured sponsorship from BP, "The brand is already prominent in the World Rally Championship" Mark Reader, BP's UK Fuels Marketing Manager, commented, "Sam’s an incredible prospect and we’re excited to be getting into a relationship at this stage of his career" he added.[2] Bird was elected to the Motor Sports Association Race Elite Scheme in April 2007, along with 5 other drivers in various British series and also participated in a series of aerodynamic tests with the AT&T Williams F1 Team.
Bird moved to the Manor Motorsport and the Formula 3 Euro Series in 2008 and had a testing year, finishing eleventh in the championship with 23 points – 16 of which came from second places during Saturday races at Catalunya and Le Mans and only picked up points from three other races. For 2009, he joined McLaren Autosport BRDC Award winner Alexander Sims, 2008 Mücke driver Christian Vietoris and 2008 Formula BMW Europe runner-up Marco Wittmann at Mücke Motorsport. He earned his first pole position and fastest laps, but failed to win a race en route to eighth in the championship.
Bird missed the final round of the F3 Euroseries season to join up with the ART Grand Prix team for a GP2 Asia Series test at the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi. He raced in the 2009–10 season for the team, where he finished seventh in the series, with a second place in the final round.
Bird contested the 2010 GP2 Series with ART, having long coveted a drive with the French team. He was fast but frequently unlucky, losing several potential results due to technical issues, engine failures and collisions for which he was not at fault. However, he managed to claim his maiden series win at the first race at Monza, as well as claiming his third fastest lap of the season.
For 2011, Bird moved to the iSport International team alongside Marcus Ericsson. His GP2 Asia campaign resulted in three retirements from four races, but after a strong start to the main series season, he was second in the Drivers' Championship after four rounds, with the same number of points as leader Romain Grosjean. After this point, however, he gradually slipped back in the standings and finished sixth overall at the end of the season.
Bird competed for the new Russian Time squad in 2013 and enjoyed a hugely successful season. The Englishman took five wins on the way to second place in the championship, having taken the championship race down to the very last weekend. Bird's performances alongside teammate Tom Dillman secured Russian Time first place in the GP2 constructors' championship.
On 16 November 2010 he took part in the young drivers test in Abu Dhabi driving for Mercedes GP.

The Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), the global governing body for motor sport and the federation for mobility organisations worldwide, and Formula 1 Group, the Commercial Rights Holder, have today announced the signing of the Concorde Governance Agreement, a crucial contract defining the regulatory framework and governance terms of the FIA Formula One World Championship until 2030. This follows the announcement in March that the 2026 Commercial Concorde Agreement had been signed by all the teams and Formula 1 Group. Together, these agreements constitute the ninth Concorde Agreement, representing a major step forward in the professionalisation and global development of the sport.
First introduced in 1981, the Concorde Agreements are designed to promote sporting fairness, technological innovation and operational excellence, and align all key stakeholders around a shared vision for structured governance and continued growth of the sport. Each iteration of the Concorde Agreements has shaped the FIA Formula One World Championship into the global spectacle it is today.
The ninth Concorde Agreement announced today marks the beginning of a new era of collaboration between the FIA and Formula 1 Group, who have worked together to write the next chapter in Formula 1 history, demonstrating mutual respect, transparency and shared purpose between the two organisations. It confirms the participation of all FIA Formula One World Championship teams, including the incoming Cadillac Formula 1 team, through the end of the decade, and provides a stable foundation for the sporting and technical evolution of the sport.
The Concorde Agreement underscores the commitment of the FIA, Formula 1 Group and all teams to continue growing and developing the sport, and to keep driving the momentous expansion it has seen in recent years. The new contract enables the FIA to invest further in improved race regulation, race direction, stewarding and technical expertise for the benefit of the Championship, and means the sport can continue to evolve, providing exciting technological innovation and sporting action for fans, broadcasters and partners, all within a stable and structured regulatory framework. Combined with record viewership growth, a dynamic race calendar, and increasing engagement from younger audiences, the FIA Formula One World Championship enters this next chapter with unprecedented momentum.
Mohammed Ben Sulayem, President of the FIA, said: “The ninth Concorde Agreement secures the FIA Formula One World Championship’s long-term future and I am proud of the dedication that has been invested in this process. I would like to thank Stefano Domenicali and his team in what has been a strong collaboration, building a framework grounded in fairness, stability, and shared ambition. This agreement allows us to continue modernising our regulatory, technological, and operational capabilities, including supporting our race directors, officials, and the thousands of volunteers whose expertise underpin every race. We are ensuring that Formula 1 remains at the forefront of technological innovation, setting new standards in global sport.”
Stefano Domenicali, President and CEO of Formula 1 Group, said: “Today is an important day for Formula 1. As we celebrate seventy-five years of this incredible sport, we are proud to write the next chapter in our long and amazing history. This agreement ensures that Formula 1 is in the best possible position to continue to grow around the world. I want to thank the President of the FIA, Mohammed Ben Sulayem and all the teams for the collaboration and determination to achieve the best results for the entire sport in our discussions. We have a huge amount to be proud of, but we also are focussed on the opportunities and exciting potential for Formula 1 in the years ahead.”

Members1MembersFIAMembers00Thursday, December 11, 2025 - 3:52pmThursday, December 11, 2025 - 3:52pm The Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), the global governing body for motor sport and the federation for mobility organisations worldwide, has announced a major package of fresh resources and tools to support the growth, development and capacity building of the Federation’s 149 sport member clubs (ASNs).
Motor Sport in a Box, a flagship initiative from the FIA to develop grassroots motor sport globally, will receive an extensive upgrade with the addition of timekeeping equipment to the toolkit. Launched in 2023, Motor Sport in a Box provides member clubs worldwide with all the equipment needed to host small-scale, low-cost motor sport events in convenient, affordable and accessible locations such as car parks.
The initiative has proven to be highly effective in staging entry level events in countries and regions where motor sport is less readily available; directly contributing towards the FIA’s mission to double motor sport participation globally. The addition of timekeeping equipment will be the most significant upgrade to the toolkit since its launch, unlocking new categories of grassroots motor sport whilst vastly improving the accuracy and efficiency of events.
The FIA has also today confirmed the next steps in the rollout of its digital licencing project which is modernising motor sport governance and providing ASNs with a unified, modern platform to simplify licence administration. The digital licencing system has been successfully trialled in Canada, Malta and Sri Lanka over the previous few months and will be rolled out to a further seven ASNs next year, supported by a new dedicated FIA digital licence team. The initiative will allow the management of licence status in real time, a dashboard to collate invaluable analytics and the launch of a dedicated app for drivers with Apple and Google Wallet compatibility.
Finally, the FIA Sport Clubs Handbook was released to member clubs as a one-stop shop to access advice and guidance on topics including safety, communications and training. The 176-page handbook will be hosted online as a dynamic document and is a major update and refresh of the previous 2017 edition. The Sport Clubs Handbook will serve as an invaluable resource particularly for new and emerging clubs as they establish, grow and develop motor sport within their nations.
The significant announcements made today at the ASN Forum during the FIA’s General Assemblies currently underway in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, reflect the FIA’s commitment to supporting each of the 149 ASNs with the highest quality support and resources based upon the latest innovation and world-leading expertise. As a member-led Federation they also reflect the FIA’s commitment to continuously improve and expand its member club offering, delivering excellence to meet the evolving and unique needs of motor sport in every region of the world.
Mohammed Ben Sulayem, FIA President, said:
“Our members are the driving force behind our mission and I am proud to strengthen our support for their work through these new initiatives.
“Across every Championship and discipline, our Members have worked tirelessly to deliver innovative projects both on and off the track. We are committed to ensuring our Members have the resources and opportunities to continue to grow and succeed.”
Valerio Iachizzi, FIA Secretary General for Sport, said:
"Our member clubs are at the heart of everything we do at the FIA and I am incredibly proud that we have launched such an extensive package of new resources to support ASNs. These initiatives are designed not only to provide practical tools and guidance but also to empower clubs to grow participation and strengthen the foundations of motor sport in their regions.”
The FIA Sport Clubs Handbook is available for ASN’s from today. Motor Sport in a Box with timekeeping equipment will be available to ASNs in 2026.
