“The Quick and the Dead” is a documentary film that was later released under the title “Champions Forever: The Formula One Drivers”. It was originally released in 1978 and it provides an interesting look into the lives of Formula 1 drivers of the era like Jackie Stewart and François Cevert.<br />

Perhaps the most memorable part of the 90 minute film is being driven around the Nürburgring Nordschleife in a Rolls Royce by Jackie Stewart, the scot explains each sector of the circuit in the matter-of-fact way that only a man like Jackie can. In this episode of The Racer's Edge we're delighted to welcome to the studio Alastair Caldwell, one of the most talented, practical and competitive racers ever to walk an F1 pit lane. Alastair talks about his early days in NZ (including the untimely death of his brother, Bill); his first job at McLaren Racing; the adventures prior to his first Grand Prix (Monza, 1967); Bruce's first win with his own car (Spa, 1968); Bruce's fatal accident at Goodwood; and about some of the major behind-the-scenes incidents of 1976, including tyre "modifications" and the fuel drama at Monza. Alastair also talks about his respect for Adrian Newey and about his passion in recent years - classic car rallies. Maintaining the McLaren theme, we also talk to the winner of last Sunday's Mid-Ohio IndyCar race, Charlie Kimball. Charlie's father, Gordon, was a leading design engineer at McLaren before switching to other teams and ultimately setting up his own company.<br />
